Dear reader,

True to the promise in “TransNamib: Dimensions of a Desert”, below you find a compilation of some more important information:

Here is our packing list

and this is the technical equipment of the vehicle.

A frequently asked question is about tyre pressures.

Some reflections on acquiring a suitable vehicle.

A GPS for off road navigation we consider non-negotiable. For a small fee you get the necessary charts for the southern and -to a lesser degree – for the eastern part of Africa on the web site www.Tracks4Africa.com. For the TransNamib tour only, the Namibia map, including the southern region of Angola, will do. It may happen that a track from www.Tracks4Africa.com has totally been reclaimed by the bush after a couple of years, or that an existing one doesn’t show.  Hence as a supplement our road book in case a track has partly vanished or totally. On Google Earth you can trace both the track and the way points:

track TransNamib on Google Earth [396 kb]
way points from the table below on Google Earth [82kb]

(Google Earth is needed for the display)

A Garmin map source programme (comes along with the Garmin GPS) enables you to read the following gbd file with our track and the way points according to the road book and to upload onto a GPS:

Track and way points to download in Map Source Format (gdb file) [271 kb]

(for the display you need MapSource from Garmin)

Tides:

Absolutely, we recommend doing the beach leg in Angola but during spring tide. For a calendar to the tides in Namibe you follow the link:

Mocamedes, Angola (tides chart in Moçâmedes/Namibe)

Tide calendar: Tide calendar: Mocamedes, Angola  (tides calendar for the current year)

In case you need data for other places choose from the list: Tide predictions map

Roadbook and waypoints “Trans Namib: Dimensions of a Desert”

Listed are crucial waypoints and additional ones. Prerequisite for this trip is a GPS compatible map. The Namibia cum Angola map from www.Tracks4Africa.com proved to be very useful. Our readings serve as supplement to this routing map.
